The first thing I notice about the photograph are the clearly printed words across the building. "When you take someones life you forfeit your own." This is a bold statement and it caused me to take into consideration the multiple meanings. It was impossible to overlook the depth of the statement. After the text the next most prominent aspect of the picture was the portrait on the wall of the building in the bottom right hand corner. The predominant choice of red in the painting draws the rest of the photograph together. There are red details all through the photograph.
Red is a symbolic color: it represents passion, blood and aggression. It is loud and though provoking. The picture does not come across to me as dreary but the fact that such a heavy connotation is drawn from it makes the viewer realize the prevalence of the meaning in everyday life.
Life is lost every second. It is not always a literal loss of life, but everyone is constantly affected. People overcome it.

Exiting way of looking at the picture. Most of us (including myself) jumped to the conclusion about the house being a memorial sight. You prefer taking a more general point of view, emphasizing the meaning of the sentence in a general context.
Further more, your interpetation of the color red really opened my eyes to the slightly more technological aspect of the picture.
You bring up a very interesting point, saying that the house might not be a memorial. I don't quite understand by what you mean "not literal" loss of life.
